Investing in your memories.

Lets face it, weddings are expensive.

For a lot of couples planning a wedding, professional wedding photography is not a necessity. It is a luxury.

And when you know your Uncle Richard will bring along his nice camera to the wedding anyway, it can become harder for couples to justify spending money to hire a professional. I totally get it.

But today I wanted to share with you the reasons why I believe professional wedding photography is an investment that is incredibly worthwhile. An investment that you will thank yourself over and over again for making.

There’s a big difference between professional photographers and hobby photographers.

I have nothing against Uncle Richard. He’s probably an awesome bloke.

But just because he owns a high quality camera doesn’t mean he should be given the complete responsibility of capturing your wedding day memories.

Does that sound mean? Maybe. But hear me out.

Owning a high quality camera doesn’t instantly make you a professional photographer. Just like owning a sharp pair of scissors doesn’t make you a professional hairdresser.

You could cut your hair for free and end up with a dodgy, lopsided fringe (we’ve all been there, am I right?) or you could pay a professional to cut your hair – and I guarantee you’ll be more satisfied with the results.

Professional photographers see and use light to enhance their images. They will be expert people watchers and be able to predict moments before they even happen. Uncle Richard might capture the big moments, but a professional photographer will capture the little moments for you too. Like the way your Dad looked at you when you first came down the stairs in your dress. Or the way your Grandma and Grandpa held hands as you said your vows.

And the best part is, when you hire a professional photographer, they are there solely to tell your story – so you don’t have to worry about moments missed because Uncle Richard is at the bar.

The value of your wedding photos will continue to increase over time.

The sad truth is, your wedding day will fly by in an instant.

I could sugercoat things but instead I’m just going to be honest.

Your flowers will wilt. Your dress will most likely find a place in the corner of your closet. So many of the things that you invested in to make your wedding truly beautiful will not be used again.

Now, I’m not saying that these things shouldn’t be invested in. The dress, the bouquet and the bling (to name a few)…they’re all special in their own right and I truly believe that every bride should feel like a total rockstar on their wedding day :)

But the reality is, photography is one of the only wedding investments that will continue to increase in value long after the wedding day itself.

When the wedding day has come and gone, you will treasure all of the precious moments that were captured for you by your photographer. And you won’t be the only one. Your family and friends will treasure them too…and your kids…and their kids.

Your wedding photos will become a valuable reminder of the love you share, the happiness you felt, and all the little details that made your day so special. When you look at your wedding photos the memories will come flooding back no matter how much time has passed.

Life is unpredictable.

I’m not writing this to be morbid. But life throws us curveballs. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations outside of our control. We just don’t know what is around the corner.

For example when a loved one falls ill or passes away, photos can become more important than ever.

They become memory aids. A reminder of what they looked like. The way they smiled. A precious moment you shared together.

Photography preserves people and moments in time for you to treasure forever.

And that in itself is an incredibly worthwhile investment.
