All about engagement sessions

Engagement photo sessions. They’re talked about in bridal magazines, featured on blogs, pinned on pinterest and offered in packages by photographers. You might have seen them pop up on facebook or instagram through friends or photographers you follow. But what are they? What should you expect from them? And is it necessary to have one?

Today I wanted to chat about engagement photo sessions in the hope of answering the popular questions newly engaged couples often have when considering booking one.

What the heck is an engagement session?

An engagement photo session is exactly what is sounds like…a professional photo session taken sometime during the period after you get engaged and before you get married. It celebrates the incredibly exciting stage of life you and your partner are in while also giving you the opportunity to receive some beautiful high quality photos!

What are the benefits?

Besides leaving you with lasting photo memories, there are many benefits to booking an engagement session with a photographer. First of all, it gives you the opportunity to “test out” a photographer (so to speak). If you haven’t booked your wedding photographer yet, it can be a great chance for you and your partner to get to know a photographer you may be considering, see if you enjoy working with them, and ensure that you feel comfortable with their style and process. Your photographer will be around you more than any other vendor on your wedding day, so it is super important that you get along well and feel comfortable with the photographer you would like to book.

If you have already booked a wedding photographer, it is still very beneficial to have an engagement session. You will get the opportunity to get to know your photographer in their element. By getting to know a photographers personality, how they work and what you can expect; your nerves will be put at ease and you will find yourself feeling more comfortable around the camera.

The amazing photos of you and your fiance could also be used on engagement party invites, save the date cards or as decorations at your wedding!

I feel nervous about having my photo taken…should I still book a session?

Yes! Definitely. Speaking as a woman who would rather hide behind her camera than to have her photo taken, I completely understand how awkward and uncomfortable it can feel when a lens is pointed your way. However, please don’t let this stop you from booking an engagement session! A good and experienced photographer will know how to get you feeling comfortable and relaxed during your session, and how to ease your nerves. Butterflies in your tummy before your session are completely normal! By the time your session is over, you will be surprised by how quickly it went, and how much more fun it was than you expected. Even better, by the time your wedding rolls around, you will feel a lot more comfortable with having your photo taken.

What should I wear?

Anything that you feel comfortable in, and that reflects your style and personality! If you feel gorgeous and confident in what you’re wearing, it will show in the photos. I recommend avoiding any clothing with writing/logos/branding on it though as it is distracting in photos when the focus should be on you as a couple!

Do I need to have an engagement session?

No. At the end of the day it is completely up to you as a couple whether you would like to have an engagement session or not! However, should you have one? Yes! You are in love, engaged and over the moon with happiness – why not celebrate that? Every love story deserves to be told, and this is a chapter you don’t want to miss!

Amy and Jarrod | Bribie Island Wedding Photography

From the moment I met Amy and Jarrod and they started talking about their wedding, I became so excited to be a part of their day.

Amy has such a bubbly and warm personality and an infectious laugh. Jarrod looks at Amy like he knows hes the luckiest man in the world. They have 3 beautiful boys together and it was so special to see them share the day with them too.

They wanted the day to be intimate and personal, inviting only their closest friends and family to celebrate with them at the Bribie Island Golf Club. On the day, you could feel the amount of love and happiness between Amy, Jarrod and their guests. It truly warmed my heart and was so much fun to photograph.

Here are some of my favourites from their incredible day.

Much love and appreciation,
